Tootalls Tips & Must Haves
Hey Girls & Guys,
Thought id like to share with you some of my Favorite Tips n Trix and Must Have items that I think ALL derby girls should have in their Skate Bag!!
Ok so first up this is only "my" thoughts and recommendations from my experiences as a derby skater (est. March 2009) and everyday skater since I was 2yrs old. I also work in a derby store and am constantly viewing and testing new products as they come in. So I would love to share that info with you all just to help out in what can be a mind boggling experience when you first are joining the wonderful world of derby or are looking for an upgrade or just want to know what’s out there!!
So my plan is to do a write up at least once a month!!
So for the first month id like to start with an absolute MUST HAVE ITEM for everyone who values their Derby and skating career!!
The Triple 8 Knee Gasket.

This is probably the most important piece of equipment I have in my bag (after my Helmet)
As you all know most knee pads are made universal and every knee is different. So you will find you won’t fit perfectly into your knee pad. That is where the gaskets play their part in adding much needed protection and support for your knee. They do this by going under your knee pad and having the rubber knee cushion mold around your knee cap to fill in the places where your knee pad may not support. They should also fit nice and snug to give you some compression support which also helps your knee stay where it should.
They also have Velcro patches to help hold your Knee Pads up and in place, and Tabs to help pull your gaskets into place.
TIPS N TRIX:
So you’re sitting there waiting for days for the white van to pull up in your driveway and have a man/lady carrying a large box knock on your door. You hurrily sign the driver’s books and race back inside, tear open the postage box to reveal your new shiny best friends!! You’re Skates.
Then 2 days later after you’ve done a few test skates up and down the hallways of your home, you decide its time to venture out into the great outdoors. You’re happily skating away in your brand new skates when the first of probably many falls happens.
You get up look around, dust yourself off, and then you see it. Your shiny new friends have there first scratch or scuff up the side of your boot. You’re horrified and wonder how you could ever inflict such pain on your new besties.
So if this has happened to you, you’re not going to like it when I explain that for under $10 you could have prevented this tragedy from occurring (not the falling down bit, that’s up to you to fix)
The Tip is Hockey Tape. You tape the front part of your skates. I usually start half way up the inside of your boot, then tape all the way around the front of the toe up to the same length on the outside. Make sure you tape as high up to your laces.
You can also tape the heel of your boot just incase of those backwards falls.
For even more protection you can add “Toe Guards”, which is a leather strap that is held on by your toe stops then goes up to your laces and is laced onto your boots.
Both the Tape and the Toe Guards come in an array of different colours, so you can personalize you’re skates to suit you!!
