Support For a Good Cause

I watched one of my best friends lose her mum to cancer when we were teenagers, and she then got cancer herself a few years later. I didn't handle it well - I was so scared I was going to lose her, like she had lost her mum. I shut off and didn't want to face what was happening to her. My friend got through it - she's an amazing person. I regret my reaction every day. Chances are pretty good it will happen to other friends in my lifetime. Next time I don't want to be scared and feel helpless when there is something that I can do which could help others needlessly suffering from this horrible disease.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am not the most athletic or outdoorsy type of person. That's why I chose the Trek for a Cure Peru Challenge. Not that it in any way compares to the suffering of a person living with cancer, but I wanted to choose something that would be physically and mentally challenging for me. 60km trekking through the Peruvian Andes to Machu Picchu (not to mention the camping!!) will certainly be that for me!

So please - dig deep and give to this amazing cause.

With $4,499 raised Briony is almost half way there. Please click on her photo to help her make it to her aim of $10,000. Every little bit counts!

These kids want to Roll!

Cairns Junior Rollers is a Junior Roller derby League. Junior Roller derby helps children between 7-17 build self esteem and self confidence.

We are raising funds this year to travel to bout against other junior leagues within Australia. Living in Cairns means we have a long way to travel to other Junior Derby Leagues that are bout ready. Travel means high costs and we are hoping to raise at least $5000 this year as a total for all our fundraising efforts so parents have minimum expenses. It will be a great opportunity for our kids to meet and play other children with similar interests. As well as raise awareness for Junior Roller Derby in Australia.

Local Excitement!

One of our Local Leagues Newcastle Roller Derby League is sending their Rep Team the Dockyard Dames to play in Adelaide at The Great Southern Slam (Australian Roller Derby Nationals)! Another bit of excitement is our very own De-Bri (manager/owner) has somehow managed to fit Extra training into her busy schedule to qualify for this team. So not only will Roller Derby Heaven be at TGSS in True Derby Store form but also in Player/Team Member form!

The Team held a Fundraiser earlier in the week, and the word successful doesn't even begin to describe the night. The event was a Photgraphic Exhibition Designed and Presented by amazing Ange 'Dangerass' Stephens (also a member of the Dockyard Dames Team). Each member of the team was photographed individually however before this could be done Dangerass asked each memeber of the team "Imagine yourself as the best derby player you could possibly be. Not what you think you are capable of, what you are in your dreams. What would be the 1 word you would use to describe what you would bring to your team and your sport?" Some answers included: Courage, Spirit, Inspiration, Focus, Motivation, Confidence, Machine, Strength and many more. Each of these were completely captured thanks to the Talent that is Dangerass.

Each portrait truly portrayed the word each member wished they could be. Each portrait showed utter power along with their own individual strength and beauty. Dangerass' abilty to capture each of the different personalities was amazing but even more amazing was her abilty to capture the Passion each member has for this Team.

One added extra that really tied it all together was a short film put together by Coach AJ Stephens, the film captures again the Passion that this team has. This Film is based around a Poem/Creed that Nerina 'Beaver Destruction' Van Der Kooi wrote. It is uttterly dramatic and oh so Powerful! De-Bri admits to not having a dry eye each time she reads it, hears it or even when she was recording her part for this film "It really describes the closeness of this team, I am so Lucky to be a Dame"
